How to connect to the SFTP server with WinSCP on Windows?
This article explains how to connect to a SFTP server with WinSCP. Note: You can use another tool if you are confident to generate an SSH key pair and connect to an SFTP server with it.
Once the server has been created, you need to test the connection to the server. Remember that access must be configured from a computer that has access to the folder where the previously generated private key is stored. The private key is used to authenticate yourself to the server.
1. Connection to the server
Open WinSCP and click on “New tab” and choose “New site”. Enter the server information in the window visible below. Optional: After you have entered all information click on “Save” to save the session and easily reconnect in the future.
File protocol: SFTP
Host name: From the AFT client interface (see article: Create a new Agicap hosted SFTP server (overview SFTP customer interface) )
Port number: 2222
Username: From the AFT client interface (see article: Create a new Agicap hosted SFTP server (overview SFTP customer interface) )
Password: Leave this field empty
Now click on "Advanced" (below the password field) and select "Authentication" on the left-hand side of the new window that opens.
Click on the "Private key file" field, select the file in which the private key is located and click on "OK". You will now be redirected to the main window from where you can start the authentication by clicking on "Login". If you have previously assigned a password to the private key, you must enter it each time you connect.
2. Result of the connection
Please inform us as soon as the connection to the server has been successfully established so that we can initiate the next integration steps.
However, if an error occurs, we recommend that you
check the parameters used (IP address, user name, port).
consult https://winscp.net/eng/docs/messages.
whitelist the IP address of the server and the port (2222).
If you cannot find a solution to the error that has occurred, please send us a screenshot of the error message so that we can assist you.
3. Common error
I can't connect to the SFTP server because it times out.
It’s likely that a firewall on my network is blocking certain IPs. If WinSCP gets stuck at "Looking up host," it means it can’t resolve files.agicap.com . I need to ask my IT team to whitelist the FQDN files.agicap.com so the network allows access.
Tip: I can try connecting with WinSCP from my personal laptop. If it works, the issue is with a restriction on my server or network.
Message to your IT team you can send: “I'm unable to connect to the SFTP server due to a timeout. Please check if our firewall is blocking the domain files.agicap.com and whitelist it if necessary.”
